In October 2022, TikTok released its photo mode feature in response to Instagram’s feed carousels. In August 2023, TikTok introduced text posts. In their official blog post announcing the new update, TikTok said, “With text posts, we’re expanding the boundaries of content creation for everyone on TikTok, giving the written creativity we’ve seen in comments, captions, and videos a dedicated space to shine.”

This feature allows users to share up to 1,000 characters per post, complete with stickers, sounds and/or coloured backgrounds. Unlike threads and X, TikTok’s text posts are designed to look like an Instagram story, and users can interact with them in the comments.

This update is well-intentioned and lets camera-shy creators build an audience by sharing their thoughts and creativity through text posts. This option is available from the app’s camera tools. Choose ‘text’ to be directed to the text post page, type out your post, accent it with emojis, backgrounds, tags, and links, and you’re good to go!

We are still waiting to see whether this update catches on and brings a wave of TikTok poets. The introverts seem to be having a moment now, and we’re here for it.
